Brazil wins the 1st popular clinic in cannabinoid therapy

Two Bahians opened the first clinic with therapeutic care, based on the use of cannabinoid therapy in Brazil.

“Doctora Sativa” will also offer consultations at popular prices and free of charge for low-income families.

The medicinal use of cannabis sativa has been increasingly discussed and applied in Brazil. The opening of medicine to these treatments allows for the control and improvement of several chronic diseases such as Alzheimer's and other degenerative diseases.

The idea came biomedical doctor Guilherme Cardoso and doctor Beatriz Sampaio, who met in 2015 during a scientific initiation at USP in Ribeirão Preto, in the interior of São Paulo.

At the time, they were researching new molecular technologies for treating Alzheimer's. During their studies, both were fascinated by the endocanbinoid system and began to delve into the subject.

“We don't learn about this in college. It has the endocrine and cardiovascular system, but the endocannabinoids are never mentioned”, says Guilherme.

Accessible services

According to Guilherme, the consultation prices charged for private care were thought of as an affordable average.

“We researched the average price applied [for consultations with treatment focused on medical cannabis] in Brazil and it varies between R$ 500 and R$ 1,000”, explains the biomedic. “The amount that the population can afford, on average, is up to R$300. It is on this price that we are based here,” he said.

But Dr. Sativa will also provide free care for the low-income population. Today there is a queue of 25 patients and calls are made according to the clinic's internal criteria.

According to Guilherme, despite the clinic offering free care, it is necessary to wait, as the treatments require drugs that still have a very high cost.

The biomedic explains that they vary between R$300 and R$2,000.

Guilherme believes that Dr. Sativa brings benefits that go beyond the affordable costs of consultations – as well as free care.

He explains that the monitoring carried out in the space is, in fact, different. The clinic offers three types of consultations: an initial one to understand the case; one that includes a diagnosis made by the multidisciplinary medical team; and a monthly follow-up of the case.

“Generally, doctors prescribe medication, but they do not follow the patient's journey. As it is something very new, there is not yet a 100% defined protocol for its use”, says the biomedical doctor.

“Therefore, a monthly follow-up is necessary, capable of identifying the correct dosage and orienting the patient about the best storage conditions and possible side effects.”.
